2006 Indian Stamps: Don Bosco Salesians

The Salesians of Don Bosco (or the Salesian Society, originally known as the Society of St. Francis de Sales) is a Roman Catholic religious order founded in the mid nineteenth century by Saint John Bosco in an attempt, through works of charity, to care for the young and poor children of the industrial revolution. The Salesians' charter describes the society's mission as "the Christian perfection of its associates obtained by the exercise of spiritual and corporal works of charity towards the young, especially the poor, and the education of boys to the priesthood". The order is named for St. Francis de Sales, an early-modern bishop of Geneva.
The Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) are an international organization dedicated full time to the service of young people, especially those who are poorer and disadvantaged. Founded in 1859 by Don Bosco, an Italian saint-educator, we are present in some 130 countries. SDB are in India since 1906.The Salesians of Don Bosco are recognized by the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) as an official NGO with consultative status at the UN.
Don Bosco institutions are found all over India. Currently we are present in some 400 places, spread across 27 States and 3 Union Territories of India. Generally, each of these presences will offer a number of youth-related, educational or developmental services.
SDB are organized into ten provinces in India. Each province is named after a city where the headquarters (Provincial House) of the province is situated. Thus SDB has the provinces of Bangalore, Chennai, Dimapur, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Panjim, Tiruchy. Each province is headed by a Provincial who is helped by a team of councillors. The Salesian Provinces of India, along with those of Sri Lanka and Myanmar, form the Salesian Provincial Conference of South Asia (SPCSA). The SPCSA is an inter-provincial body meant primarily for ‘reflection, sharing and coordination’ among the Salesian provinces of South Asia.
