Indian Stamp-Remembering Thomas Alva Edison



Thomas Alva Edison (Depicted On The First Day Cover Of The Indian Stamp of 1979), inventor of the phonograph, the incandescent light bulb, and many other devices that make our lives fuller and simpler, was born in Milan, Ohio, in 1847 on this day Feb 11th.
Thomas Edison was born in Milan, Ohio and grew up in Port Huron, Michigan. He was the seventh and last child of Samuel Ogden Edison, Jr. (1804-96, born in Marshalltown, Nova Scotia, Canada) and Nancy Matthews Elliott (1810-1871).His father had to escape from Canada because he took part in the unsuccessful Mackenzie Rebellion of 1837

The phonograph was developed as a result of Thomas Edison’s work on two other inventions, the telegraph and the telephone.
