Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs V. Narayanasamy on 7th Feb 2011 released a commemorative Indian stamp to mark the birth centenary of veteran Communist leader and freedom fighter V. Subbiah.
V Subbiah (Depicted On Indian Stamp) is considered as doyen of the trade unionist movement in Puducherry(Pondicherry), Subbiah started his political career as a supporter of the Indian National Congress.
A great orator, he mobilized the student and labor communities against the French rule in the Union Territory and was also imprisoned several times for his efforts in organising anti-French and anti-British protests.
The greatness of Subbiah was the fact that he was sensitive towards the poor and the marginalized in society. Constant harassment by the French rulers did not affect his determination and he emerged above petty politics in the struggle for freedom.
