Today was the day Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar were hanged during the Indian struggle for independence. The day is remembered in India as Shahidi divas or Martyr's day.Today’s stamp for the day is dedicated to the Martyr Bhagat Singh

 

Bhagat Singh was a well known Indian freedom fighter, considered to be one of the most prominent revolutionaries of the Indian Freedom struggle against the British. Bhagat Singh is often referred to as Shaheed Bhagat Singh

Bhagat Singh was born to a Jat Sikh family which had earlier been involved in revolutionary activities against the British Raj, Singh, as a teenager, became an atheist and studied European revolutionary movements.

Bhagat Singh was drawn towards anarchism and marxist ideologies.Bhagat Singh was involved with several revolutionary organizations. Bhagat Singh fast rose through the ranks of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) and became one of its leaders, converting it to the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). Bhagat Singh gained support when he underwent a 64-day fast in jail, demanding equal rights for Indian and British political prisoners.

Bhagat Singh was hanged to death for shooting a police officer in response to the killing of veteran freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai . Bhagat Singh’s legacy prompted youth in India to begin fighting for Freedom Of India and contributed to the rise of socialism in India.
