Stamp On Robert Koch-World Tuberculosis Day

Today was the day Robert Koch announced the discovery of mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis. The day is celebrated worldwide as “World Tuberculosis Day”.Today’s stamp for the day is dedicated to this Great Scientist.

World Tuberculosis Day is marked on March 24 every year to create awareness about the dreaded disease that is still killing hundreds of  people all around the world.

Robert Koch was born in Clausthal Prussia one of the German states as the son of a mining official. Robert Koch did his graduation in medicine under Friedrich Gustav Jakob Henle at the University of Göttingen and graduated in the year 1866.

Robert Koch then served in the Franco-Prussian War and later was appointed the district medical officer, Wollstein (Wolsztyn), Prussian Poland. Robert Koch inspite of working under limited resources, became one of the founders of bacteriology along with Louis Pasteur.

Robert Koch improved the medical methods he used in Wollstein, including staining and purification techniques, and bacterial growth media, including agar plates and the Petri dish, named after its inventor, his assistant Julius Richard Petri. These devices are still used today. With these techniques, he was able to discover the bacterium causing tuberculosis called Mycobacterium tuberculosis in 1882 (he announced the discovery on 24 March 1882 ). Tuberculosis was the cause of one in seven deaths in the mid-19th century.
