Stamps Of Halley’s Comet

Today was the day in 240 BC was recorded the first perihelion passage of Halley's Comet By Chinese Astronomers.Today’s Stamp for the day takes a look at 1985 Indian Stamps On Halley’s Comet

Comets are small icy bodies, often measuring a few kilometers in width.Comets are formed in the outer solar system where temperatures are cold enough to sustain (predominately water) ices. They represent the leftover bits and pieces from the outer solar system formation process that took place some 4.6 billion years ago.

Comet Halley is the most famous of all comets. Although it has a rather long period of revolution (about 76 years), it has probably been observed since the year 240 B.C. when the first record by Chinese observers was dated .It was observed and recorded at all of its last 30 apparitions (perihelia) from 241 B.C. to 1986 A.D.Its next return will occur in 2062.

Edmund Halley - after which the comet is named - was the first to prove that several historical sightings of strange things in the sky were in fact Halley’ Comet, which is visible from Earth every 75 to 76 years.
