Yuri Gagarin was born in the village of Klushino near Gzhatsk (See the Geographical Tag For The Stamp) on 9 March 1934 to Russian couple Alexey Ivanovich Gagarin and Anna Timofeyevna Gagarina.Yuri Gagarin’s mother was a voracious reader, and his father a skilled carpenter.
Yuri was the third of four children, and his elder sister helped raise him while his parents worked. The Gagarin family underwent misery during Nazi occupation in World War II. Gagarin’s two older siblings were deported to Nazi Germany for slave labor in 1943, and did not comeback until after the war.During his childhood Yuri became interested in space and planets, and started to dream about his space tour which would one day become a reality
Yuri Gagarin started as an apprentice in a metalworks as a foundryman, Gagarin underwent further training at a technical high school in Saratov. At Saratov, he joined the "AeroClub", and learnt how to fly a aircraft.In 1955,Gagarin made it to military flight training at the Orenburg Pilot's School where he flew MiG-15.Yuri Gagarin became Lieutenant of the Soviet Air Force in and was promoted with the rank of Senior Lieutenant in 1959.
In 1960, Yuri Gagarin along with 19 other cosmonauts made it to the Soviet Space Program and especially to the Vostok programme.On 12 April 1961,Gagarin became the first man to travel outer space, launching to orbit aboard the Vostok 3KA-3 ( Vostok 1).His call sign in this flight was Kedr.
