Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin which is vital for normal growth and development .The story of Vitamin C discovery dates back to the Middle Ages.

Severe vitamin C deficiency has been known for many centuries as causing life threatening disease, scurvy. By the late 17 Century the British Navy Forces was aware that scurvy could be cured by eating oranges or lemons.

The early 20th century brought a breakthrough when, around 1930, chemical researchers isolated and identified the active component that plays a fundamental role in preventing and healing scurvy. The chemical structure of vitamin C was clarified a few years later. The substance was called ascorbic acid

The Vitamin C molecule represents the innovative force of Swiss chemical research and the ability to exploit it commercially. In 1933, Tadeus Reichstein, a chemist working at the Zurich Federal Institute of Technology, managed to produce synthetic ascorbic acid on the
basis of glucose.

Tadeus Reichstein, Kendall, and Hench were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1950.
