Jamini Roy was born on April 11,1887 in Bankura district Of West Bengal. Jamini Roy joined the Government School of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta in 1903.
Jamini Roy’s new style of Painting was both a reaction against the Bengal School and the Western tradition. Jamini Roy’s underlying quest was threefold to capture the essence of simplicity embodied in the life of the folk people; to make art accessible to a wider section of people
Jamini Roy was awarded the Padma Bhusan in 1954. Jamini Roy’s Painting are part of many private and public collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Jamini Roy spent most of his life living and working in Calcutta. Initially he experimented with Kalighat paintings but found that it has ceased to be strictly a "patua" and went to learn from village patuas. Consequently his techniques as well as subject matter was influenced by traditional art of Bengal. Jamini Roy preferred himself to be called a patua.
Jamini Raoy was awarded padma Bhushan in 1955 and became Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1956. He received Hon. D. Litt. in 1967. Jamini Roy died in 1972 .
