La Posta France Has Released A Stamp With Painting “Le Bouddha” By Renowned Pastel Artist Odilon Redon

Odilon Redon was a French Symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastel artist.Odilon Redon was born in Bordeaux, Aquitaine to a wealthy family.

The young Bertrand-Jean Redon acquired the nickname "Odilon" from his mother, Odile. Redon started drawing as a child, and at the age of 10 he won a drawing prize at school. Aged 15, he began the formal study of drawing, but on the insistence of his father he pursued architecture.

After Odilon’s failure to pass the entrance exams at Paris’ École des Beaux-Arts ended his career as an architect.Odilon briefly studied painting  under Jean-Léon Gérôme in 1864.

Odilon called his visionary works, conceived in shades of black, his noirs.In 1878 his work gained recognition with Guardian Spirit of the Waters, and Odilon published his first album of lithographs, titled Dans le Rêve in 1879.

Odilon’s paintings became famous with the publication of a cult novel by Joris-Karl Huysmans titled, À rebours (Against Nature). The story featured a decadent aristocrat who collected Redon's drawings.
