Asit Kumar Haldar Was A Painter And An Assistant Of Rabindranath Tagore . India Post Honored Him With A Commemorative Postage In 1991 Featuring His Painting

Asit Kumar Haldar was born in Jorasanko in 1890 . Jorasanko is a well known neighborhood in north Kolkata . Jorasanko is derived from the words two (jora) and wooden or bamboo bridges(sanko) which spanned a small stream flowing in north Kolkata.

Asit Kumar Haldar was Rabindranath Tagore's grandnephew . Both his grandfather Rakhaldas Haldar and his father Sukumar Haldar were good at painting . Asit Kumar Haldar began his studies at the age of 14 . Asit Kumar Haldar studied at  the Government School of Art , Calcutta in 1904 . Asit Kumar Haldar learned sculpting from two famous Bengali artists Jadu Pal and Bakkeswar Pal . Later On from Leonard Jennings .

Asit Kumar Haldar is famous for documenting the Ajanta Cave paintings on the frescoes with Lady Herringham . In 1921 he undertook another expedition to the Bagh Caves to bring cave art to wider audience worldwide . From the year 1911 to 1915, Asit Kumar Haldar was an art teacher at Santiniketan . Asit Kumar Haldar was also the principal of the Kala Bhavan school In Santiniketan between 1911 and 1923 , helping Tagore in his artistic endeavors . It was During this time, Asit Kumar Haldar introduced many different art styles to students of Santiniketan .

Asit Kumar Haldar visited England with Pearson . Asit Kumar Haldar came back to India to Maharaja Of Jaipur Art School in 1923 . In 1925 he joined Government Art College In Lucknow as its principal . Asit Kumar Haldar was the first Indian to be elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London.
