Kanika Bandyopadhyay was Born on October 12, 1924 at Sonamukhi in Bankura district Of West Bengal . Kanika Bandyopadhyay joined Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan in West Bengal, India . Kanika Bandyopadhyay learnt both classical and Rabindra sangeet in Sangeet Bhavana (School of Music) at the famous Santiniketan . Kanika Bandyopadhyay is also occasionally referred to as Ashram Kanya or 'girl of the Ashram' since Shantiniketan was like an hermitage (Ashram). Rabindranath Tagore himself taught her music. Rabindranath Tagore rechristened her as Kanika from her original name Anima.Tagore also wrote one of his books on Poetry after her. Kanika Bandyopadhyay's other gurus included Dinendra Nath Tagore, Sailajaranjan Majumdar, Indira Devi Chowdhurani and Santidev Ghosh. Kanika Bandyopadhyay used to regularly take part in plays directed by Rabindranath Tagore and toured all over India as a member of Rabindranath Tagore's cultural troupe.Kanika Bandyopadhyay served as principal of Sangeet Bhavan. 1943 onwards Kanika was regularly featured on Calcutta station of All India Radio.Kanika also rendered performances at the national level in the musical programmes . Kanika's has 300 gramophone records to her credit. Kanika also sang Bhajans, Nazrulgeeti (songs by Kazi Nazrul Islam) and Atulprasad's songs. Visva-Bharati offered her its highest accolade, the Desikottama, in 1997. | |||
