Today was the day  Polish Renaissance Astronomer Nicholas Copernicus passed away in 1543.Today’s Indian Stamp for the day is Stamp of India released in the year 1973 featuring Copernicus

Discoveries Of Astronomy by Nicholas Copernicus is considered to be the starting point of Modern Astronomy. Nicholas Copernicus was born on 19th February 1473 to a merchant family in Torun,Poland. Copernicus was orphaned at the age of 10. Nicholas Copernicus was brought up by his uncle who ensured Copernicus studied at University of Cracow and some of the best universities in Italy

 

 

Nicholas Copernicus  became  a canon at the cathedral in Frauenberg at the age of 24 at the behest of his uncle. A canon was not a priest but Church administrator). Upon his uncle’s death in 1512, Copernicus moved in to cathedral where he served rest of his life.

               During 1514 Nicholas Copernicus Proposed a Model Of Heliocentric Model Of Earth.As per this model Copernicus he put forward a new theory stating the center of the universe was Sun and not the earth. Nicholas Copernicus also conveyed through his commentaries that earth rotates on it’s axis and revolves around the Sun.

With fear in mind that he may embarrass the church,Copernicus started gathering observations and calculations which he published in the form Of a book De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium .

After hesitation Copernicus allowed  astronomer Joachim Rheticus (1514-1576) to publish his account of Heliocentric Model in Rheticus’s book Prima Narratio (First Narrative).In 1542 Nicholas Copernicus wanted his entire book to be published but before the printing could be completed he died in the spring of 1543
