In the series Of Stamps On "World Heritage Site by UNESCO", Fortified church Of Biertan is being featured in the joint issue between Germany and Romania, released on 15th Sept 2011.

The historic Fortified Church in Biertan is a symbol of solidarity and cohesion of the German-Romanian communities in the Middle Ages. Since 1993, the building is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Stamps From Romania And Germany Respectively On Biertan Fortified Church Released As A Joint Issue

Transylvania has been the border between West and East for centuries. The region is dominated by a German minority, which has been leaving here for 850 years, their cultural and architectural traces to the Transylvanian Saxons.The first attestation was certified in 1283,in a document about the taxes demanded by the Catholic Capital from Alba Iulia to the Catholic priests from the Transylvanian Saxon communities.

Fortified Church Of Biertan is an architectural masterpiece symbolizing the colonization by the Saxons of Transylvania. Out of a total of almost 300 fortified churches built between the 15th and 16th centuries, the church from Biertan has been preserved very well.Fortified Church Of Biertan is placed high on a hillock right in the center of the village, in the center covered by transverse valleys,vineyards, maize cultures and forests .

The Church is of hall type, with 3 naves, from the period of late Gothic was built in 1500-1516 and has been heightened with a fortified level. The inner wall, from the same period, was fortified during the 16th century with 8 towers,being unfolded in a spiral form,like a 3-towered belt around the hill.

The present church is embellished by walls painted in the 16th century. Another church occupied the same place before.
