| South and North Kanara In Karnataka are the “native place” of the 1,500,000 Saraswats . Saraswat Brahman community is a small, highly urbanized community . The Saraswats are today divided into 5 main groups : the Vaishnava Goud Saraswats , the Smarta Chitrapur Saraswats and the Shenvis . The name Saraswat gives a view into the legendary origin of the community . Saraswats are Aryans, originally inhabiting the valley of the river Saraswati in Kashmir. Chitrapur Math ( shown on Stamp Of India) is the central shrine serving the Smarta Chitrapur Saraswat Sect established in the year 1757 . The Chitrapur Math Is located in Shirali in North Karnataka Area Of Karnataka (See the geographical tag for the stamp ). The chief deity of the math is Shri Bhavanishankar , A form of Lord Shiva.
