President Pratibha Patil Releasing The Stamp Of The Punjab Regiment In Presence Of Sachin Pilot and Defence Minister A.K.Anthony

The Punjab Regiment with regimental center based at Ramgarh In Jharkand is the oldest Infantry regiment of the Indian Army . The origin of the Punjab Regiment can be  traced back to 1761.  The first units of the Punjab Regiment were carved out of the erstwhile Coastal Sepoys, which were known as Carnatic Battalions and then Madras Battalions.

In October 1761, the first battalions of the Punjab Regiment were raised. These battalions underwent several changes later on,to be known as 2nd Punjab Regiment. The recruitment to this regiment was confined to the areas of Punjab.

The 1st Battalion of the Parachute Regiment (1 Punjab ) is now integral part of the Army’s elite Special Forces. The 1st Battalion was earlier part of the Punjab Regiment, having been raised as the 8th Battalion Coast Sepoys in 1761 at Trichinopoly.

The Regimental Centre of 'Sikh Regiment' is based at Ramgarh in Jharkhand, not that of 'Punjab Regiment' as mentioned in this post. If possible please do correct this factual mistake.
