Marie Curie Year Of Chemistry Stamps From Bosnia Herzegovina

World is celebrating 100yrs of Marie Curie receiving Nobel Prize as International Year Of Chemistry.

Marie Curie was the first women to receive the Nobel Prize For Chemistry in 1911  for discovery of elements Polonium and Radium.

The Stamp from Bosnia Herzegovina released to mark the International Year Of Chemistry 2011 features the picture of Marie Curie while the First Day Cover carries the picture of  Quartz Electrometer while the pictorial postmark is a tribute to element “Polonium” discovered by Curie and named after her birth country Poland.

About Year Of Chemistry 2011

United Nations declared the year 2011 as International Year of
Chemistry,as the  year 2011 coincided with the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Madame Marie Curie—an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of women in the field of Chemistry and Science in general . Marie Curie was listed in the “300 Women Who Changed the world .

Marie Curie’s Discovery Of Polonium

Initially during on research Marie and Pierre Curie discovered an element called "Radium F". Radium F was later named after Marie Curie's native land of Poland . Poland at the time was under Russian , Prussian , and Austrian partition , and did not exist as an independent country .

Element Polonium was the first element discovered by the Curies while they were finding out the cause of pitchblende radioactivity . The pitchblende ore , after removal of the radioactive elements uranium and thorium , was found to be more radioactive than both the uranium and thorium together . This intrigued the Curies on to find additional radioactive elements. The Curies first separated out polonium from the pitchblende , and then within a few years, also isolated radium.
