About The Nile River

The River Nile [Shown on the Singapore Stamp of $2.00] flows in the African Continent. River Nile originates in Burundi, south of the equator, and flows northwards through northeastern Africa flowing through Egypt and draining into the Mediterranean Sea.

Lake Victoria which is the Africa's biggest lake is considered as the source of the River Nile. On the northern edge of Lake Victoria , water pours over a waterfall ,Ripon Falls , into a narrow opening to start he beginning of the River Nile

The River Nile originates as the White Nile at Lake Victoria and the Blue Nile at Lake Tana in Ethiopia. White And Blue Nile rivers meet in Sudan and continue their long journey northwards towards the sea.

The Nile River is the longest river in the world which runs 6,650 km (4,130 miles) and has been the lifeline of Egyptian Civilization since ancient times

About The Singapore River

The Singapore River (featured on the stamp of S$1.10) is also river of great historical importance but does not match the length of Nile River. The Singapore River flows from the Central Area, which lies in the Central Region in the southern part of Singapore before emptying into the ocean.

The Singapore river was made into a trading port in the year 1819 By Sir Stamford Raffles.It was the first trading port of Singapore. Singapore .Singapore River continues to play an important role as part of the Marina Reservoir.

Historic Sri Lankan Bridges And Culverts On Stamps

Whether a humble string of planks swaying across a trickling stream or the soaring towers like the Golden Gate Bridge, bridges are one of man’s great engineering feats .

Stamps of bridges are sought after by engineers to study more about the history and science  behind the development of the bridges . Recently Sri Lanka Post Released a set of stamps on Ancient Bridges and Culverts Of Sri Lanka.

The Stamps feature Ancient Stone Bridge In Mahakanadarawa,Wooden Bridge In Bogoda , Suspension Bridge In Peradeniya ,Steel Arch Bridge In Ruwanwella .

Ancient Stone Bridge In Mahakanadarawa

Ancient Stone Bridge is a well preserved stone bridge built over the Mahakanadara Wewa in Anuradhapura District . The bridge is about 10 feet wide and one of the most popular bridges in the country. The bridge has been built with stone pillars with stone slabs laid on top of them.

Wooden Bridge In Bogoda

The Wooden Or Timber Bridge over Gallanda Oya in Badulla District has 10 pillars on either side with a tiled roof . It is 50 feet-long, 6 feet wide, and 8 feet tall . It has a safety railing on either side of it.

Suspension Bridge In Peradeniya

Suspension Bridge is built over the Mahaweli Ganga and connects the Royal Botanical Garden in Peradeniya and Gannoruwa. This Bridge was built in 1935 by British Engineer Pronhill . The Bridge is nearly 6 -foot-wide, suspension bridge is about 416 feet long, with two 31-foot-high main pillars supporting the bridge held by strong cables.

Steel Arch Bridge In Ruwanwella

The Steel Arch Bridge was built over River Garu in Ruwanwella during the British era. The upper part of the bridge is 43.8 meters long and 3.6 meters.

Stamp Exhibition At Pandeshwara Post Office-An Article In The Hindu

On going Stamp exhibition at Pandeshwara Post Office in Mangalore has caught the attention of The Newspaper “The Hindu”. The article which can be viewed online , talks about how the organizers of the event have made the exhibition interesting to the children visiting the stamp exhibition .

Stamps On Postbox From Malaysia,Brazil And Andorra

As India and the world celebrates the postal week and postal day celebrations . Many countries around the world have told the world story of their postal history through their beautiful postboxes latest to join the band are Malaysia Post, Brazil Post and Andorra Post .

The Post Boxes were first used 12 years after the first postage stamp was released . The first postboxes were known as pillar boxes as they were free standing postboxes.

The oldest post box in the world is in Scotland,which is a wall box  sits in the front of the Sutherland Hotel in Golspie . The post box carries the Royal Cypher of Queen Victoria and dates back to 1861.

Royal Mail had  released a set of stamps On Postboxes In 2009 . While India Post released a set of 5 stamps on Letter Boxes in 2005.

Where Are These Paintings Located ?

“Expulsion of Heliodorus From The Temple” along with the frescoes of The Mass at Bolsena , The Meeting of Leo the Great and Attila and Deliverance of Saint Peter are present in one of the four Raphael Rooms in the palace of the Vatican . The room is known as Room of Heliodorus.

The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple Painting narrates the story from the bible wherein Heliodorus is ordered by Seleucus IV Philopator, the king of Syria, to seize the treasure preserved in the Temple in Jerusalem . Heeding to the prayers of the high priest Onias , God sends a horseman assisted by two youths to drive Heliodorus out .

Why Are Raphael Rooms So Called ?

In the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican there are four Raphael's rooms which form a suite of reception rooms which can be accessed by the public . Raphael’s Room are famous for their fresco paintings by Raphael .

These Suites were originally chosen by Pope Julius II to live. The task of decorating the ceilings had been entrusted to different artists,but in 1508 Italian Architect Bramante introduced Raphael and requested that he immediately began working on the “Room Of Segnatura. Impressed by the quality of work,  Pope decided to let him decorate the entire suite of rooms and rooms painted by him were named after him as Stanze di Raffaello ("Raphael's rooms") .
