About Year Of Chemistry 2011

United Nations declared the year 2011 as International Year of
Chemistry,as the  year 2011 coincided with the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Madame Marie Curie—an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of women in the field of Chemistry and Science in general . Marie Curie was listed in the “300 Women Who Changed the world .

Marie Curie’s Discovery Of Polonium

Initially during on research Marie and Pierre Curie discovered an element called "Radium F". Radium F was later named after Marie Curie's native land of Poland . Poland at the time was under Russian , Prussian , and Austrian partition , and did not exist as an independent country .

Element Polonium was the first element discovered by the Curies while they were finding out the cause of pitchblende radioactivity . The pitchblende ore , after removal of the radioactive elements uranium and thorium , was found to be more radioactive than both the uranium and thorium together . This intrigued the Curies on to find additional radioactive elements. The Curies first separated out polonium from the pitchblende , and then within a few years, also isolated radium.

About  The International Year Of Chemistry 2011

United Nations proclaimed the year 2011 as the International
Year of Chemistry (IYC), which will be celebrated throughout the world with the theme "Chemistry - our life, our future"  . The year of chemistry is being celebrated to coincide with the centenary of the
Marie Curie’s Nobel Prize Chemistry, with the aim to focus on the key role of female chemists in the  research work, education and industry.

About Belgium And IYC 2011

Belgium will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Solvay Physics Council . To create positive image of the chemistry to the public , the council plans to conduct many events.

It was in 1911 that Ernest Solvay laid the foundation for the modern science by calling for a gathering of prominent scientists for a new type of scientific dialogue. The participants were encourage to express themselves to open a scientific dialogue that would accelerate scientific progress. Ernest Solvay’s vision included the setting up of the International Institute of Physics, which a year later was followed by an International Institute of Chemistry. Also in 1911,Ernest Solvay supported the creation of IACS  later developed  into IUPAC .

The first conference was attended by all time great scientists like Albert Einstein and Marie Curie. The below photograph by Benjamin Couprie , is of the conference held in Brussels in the year 1911 attended by the bigwigs of the scientific world .
